Deva Fortress is considered one of the most important medieval fortifications in Transylvania. Over the centuries, it was ruled by voivodes, princes, counts and duchesses. It was gifted, sold and bombarded, with each era leaving its mark through defensive walls, new rooms, ballrooms and even an additional storey. Its owners sought to transform it from a purely defensive stronghold into an impressive and luxurious residence.
Today, its ruins can be seen from afar thanks to their strategic position atop a hill overlooking the Mureș Valley and one of Romania’s main routes towards Central and Western Europe. The fortress was built in the 13th century, although traces of human settlement in the area are much older, dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age. The first documented reference to Deva Fortress dates from 1269.
The first stone fortification in Hunedoara, known as the Royal Fortress, is dated by most researchers to the 14th century (Gheorghe Anghel), although other specialists place it in the first half of the 15th century (Elemér Mályusz, Adrian Andrei Rusu, Radu Lupescu). The fortification had an elliptical shape, massive walls up to two metres thick, and was built directly on the native rock. Research before the First World War revealed two triangular rooms in the northern area, one probably a keep, with parallels in French and German architecture of the 13th–14th centuries. Today, Corvin Castle remains one of Europe’s most spectacular medieval fortifications and a major historical symbol of Hunedoara County.

Located in one of Romania’s most picturesque regions, in the heart of Țara Hațegului at the foothills of the Retezat Mountains, Prislop Monastery is a place of profound spiritual and historical significance.
The area is considered a true “cradle of history”, with traces of Palaeolithic humans discovered in the caves of Ohaba Ponor and Cioclovina, not far from the monastery.
Founded in the 14th century by Saint Nicodemus of Tismana, a major reformer of Romanian monasticism, Prislop Monastery became an important spiritual centre of Transylvania. Here, Saint Nicodemus created the famous Slavonic Tetraevangelion, preserved today at the National Museum of Art of Romania.
Today, Prislop Monastery is one of Romania’s most visited pilgrimage sites, offering peace, reflection and an authentic connection with Romanian history and spirituality.
